Biography
Stanislaw Wyspianski was born in 1869 in Krakow. He studied at the Jagiellonian University and Jan Matejko Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow. He was a member of the Young Poland movement, and art editor of the weekly Życie (Life). Stanislaw Wyspianski is known as a playwright and poet, modernist painter, and designer. The artist died in November 1907. He was buried in Krakow.
Object description
a) The portrait represents a female bust-length figure; the image of the woman is turned three quarters to the viewer's left. Her arms are folded in front of her in a praying position. One can see a lock of hair from under the cape; it is falling on her left shoulder. She is depicted with a sad face expression. The defining features of the face are half-closed eyes and stiff lips. b) The portrait represents a bust-length figure of an angel with flowing hair. In the right hand of the character, one can see the fingerboard of a musical instrument. Facial features are depicted vaguely; facial expression represents a sense of alienation.
