In the background of a garden with a house on the right side, a young woman is depicted in a three-quarter profile facing to the right. Her gaze is directed towards the viewer. On her lap, the woman is holding a baby dressed in a white bonnet, with its arms raised upward and the gaze directed at the viewer. The woman's hair is styled in curls that cascade onto her shoulders. The hair is powdered and tied with a ribbon. She is wearing a pale lilac light dress, partially unbuttoned at the front. The image is framed in metal and embedded in the lid of a tobacco box made of tortoiseshell.
