Object description
Eleonore Maria of Austria (1653–1697) was an Austrian Archduchess, queen consort, wife of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth King, Grand Duke of Lithuania and Ruthenia, Michal Korybut Wisniowiecki, and daughter of Eleonora Gonzaga and Ferdinand III, Holy Roman Emperor, King of Hungary and Bohemia. Eleonore Maria's father died when she was four years old. Under the care of their mother, she and her sister Maria Anna were raised in Vienna. In 1670, Eleonore Maria married the King of Poland, Michal Korybut Wisniowiecki. The marriage was arranged for political reasons when Eleonore Maria was just 17 years old. The king died three years later, and their only son died at birth. Upon returning to the court, the Archduchess encountered her brother's closest friend, Charles V, Duke of Lorraine, who had been forced to leave his lands occupied by France. The difference in status hindered their relationship, but they married with the emperor's permission five years later. Leopold I appointed Charles governor of Tyrol. The duchess had six children, four of whom survived. After her husband's death, she fought to regain the Duchy of Lorraine for her son since shortly before her death, the Peace of Ryswick was signed, according to which France ceded the Duchy. Eleonore Maria of Austria died at the age of 44. The canvas depicts a young queen with a sad face, wearing a white dress of seventeenth-century fashion. She wears a string of pearls around her neck and a diadem on her head. The painting is a cropped copy of her ceremonial portrait.
