Object description
In iconographic art, the image of Matthew the Apostle has remained unchanged since the eighth century. He was depicted as an elderly man with a long beard and a book or scroll in his hands. The saint's image was often accompanied by a tetramorphic figure – a man with wings like an angel. The folk sculptor carved the evangelist figure for the Cathedral in Ivano-Frankivsk, following the iconographic canons. The work is characterised by a static pose and a restrained pattern of draperies on the clothes, created by smooth lines without sharp corners.
