Object description
The painting, executed by an unknown Italian master, depicts one of the most widely used images – the Madonna and Child with Saints. The work is a replica of Raphael's "Madonna of Divine Love", oil on wood, created around 1516–1518. The artwork is now preserved at the National Museum of Capodimonte in Naples. The saints depicted in the painting are Mary, Elizabeth, and John with the infant Jesus. Saint John kneels before the Child and holds a cross in his hand. Jesus, whose hand is held by Elizabeth, blesses the saint. In the background, Saint Joseph stands in the shadow. Raphael created this painting for Lionello Pio da Carpi, Lord of Meldola and a future cardinal. In 1564, the artwork was bought by Alessandro Farnese. In 1624, it became part of his collection in Parma and later in Naples. Subsequently, the painting was purchased by the Bourbons and taken to Madrid. After Raphael, artists frequently replicated this composition, including his follower Leonardo Grazia (Leonardo da Pistoia).
