Object description
Ecce Homo – "Behold the Man" or "This is the man", were the words Pontius Pilate spoke about Jesus Christ. According to the Gospel of John, the procurator of Judea, Pontius Pilate, presented Jesus Christ to the people of Jerusalem after he had been scourged, in an attempt to evoke sympathy from the crowd. Jesus is clothed in a red robe with a crown of thorns on his head. Many artists depicted this scene in their works. On the canvas, the figure of the suffering Saviour, naked to the waist, is accentuated by light. Jesus' muscular torso is contrasted with a red robe covering the lower part of his body. His head, crowned with thorns, is turned three-quarters to the right. Drops of blood are on his face, and his gaze is directed downward. Jesus' hands are bound with a rope, and his left hand holds a stalk. The soldier, wearing armour, holds the rope that binds Jesus with his right hand and a part of the red cloak with his left hand. The viewer cannot see the face of the soldier – it is not significant.
