Biography
Volodymyr Sichynskyi (June 24, 1894, Kamianets-Podilskyi – June 25, 1962, Paterson, USA) was a prominent Ukrainian architect, graphic artist, art critic, bibliographer, teacher, and a full member of the Shevchenko Scientific Society (since 1930). He studied at the Kamianets-Podilskyi Industrial Art School (1905–1912) and the Saint Petersburg Institute of Civil Engineers (1912–1917). In 1918, he moved to Lviv, later co-founding the Group of Ukrainian Art Workers (1921). From 1923 to 1945, he lived in Prague, where he taught art history at the Ukrainian Pedagogical Institute and the Ukrainian Free University. In 1943, Sichynskyi was arrested by the Gestapo and detained in prisons in Prague and Berlin. In 1949, he moved to the United States. Sichynskyi authored studies on architecture, printing, art, and numerous projects of Ukrainian churches built in Slovakia, Brazil, Canada, and the USA, as well as monuments. As a book graphic designer, Sichynskyi designed more than 70 of his own and other people's publications. The artist's works are kept in state museums and private collections in Ukraine, the USA, Germany, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia.
