Object description
The Virgin Mary is executed in the same manner as the sculpture of Saint John with the inventory number C-I-1839. The small-sized static full-length figure of Mary was a part of a composition. The sculpture was carved from a single piece of wood. Delicately modelled, the maphorion covers the saint's head, wraps around her shoulders, and drapes down the back. The long tunic is covered with vertical draperies, the linear interpretation of which is characterised by slow movements. The mournful and humble face of Mary worked out in soft lines and her hands held to her chest express the pain of irreparable loss. Performed in a simple manner, typical of folk artists, the sculpture conveys a sense of humility and acceptance of the inevitable events that befell the Virgin Mary.
