Object description
The full-length contrapposto sculpture of the saint is depicted in an expressive pose with arms outstretched to the right. The man's elongated ascetic face has expressive features: eyes looking up, eyelids barely closed, cheekbones protruding, cheeks sunken, and mouth open. The waves of unruly hair frame the saint's head. Long strands of a split beard fall to his chest. The dynamic pose and theatrical movement of the figure add to the emotional expressiveness of the image. A long tunic wraps around his body, leaving his shod feet exposed. The monumental, somewhat restrained folds of his garment, formed by geometric planes, create chiaroscuro effects that enhance the emotional intensity of the image.
