Object description
The hand cross is seven-pointed, with an elongated central crosspiece. Its composition is simple and laconic. On the front, in the upper part of the central core, is a relief of the Crucifixion. The Saviour's body and the figures' silhouettes at each end of the central cross are schematically represented in flat relief. Above Christ's head is a title with a traditional inscription. On the back of the hand cross in the centre is a relief of the Virgin Mary and the Christ Child, made in imitation of Western European iconographic models. The figure of the Virgin Mary and the two figures at the ends of the cross are schematic. These figures show a tendency towards geometric forms. The depiction of the Virgin with the Christ Child in her arms shows the influence of Western European iconography, manifested in the depiction of saints in crowns. A thin, smooth, carved stripe outlines the perimeter of the seven-pointed cross. There are disproportions and generalisations in the reproduction of the images. The figures are flat, with graphic decoration of the clothing, typical of folk artists.
