Biography
Franciszek Streitt (1839, Brody, Austrian Empire – 1890, Munich, Germany) was a German artist. He graduated from the Real School in Lviv (1854). From 1856 to 1866, he studied painting at the Krakow School of Fine Arts under Wladyslaw Luszczkiewicz and Jan Matejko. Franciszek Streit was a graduate of the Vienna Academy of Arts (1871). During his studies, he made trips to Galicia and Hungary. In 1871, he moved to Munich, where he established a joint art studio with Antoni Kozakiewicz, became a member of the Polish group of artists, and also joined the Munich Art Association. He devoted himself to genre painting depicting the lives of Galician peasants and Roma and also painted historical scenes from the history of the Kingdom of Poland. He was married to the artist Maria Theresia Friedl. The works by Franciszek Streit are featured in museum collections in Germany, Austria, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
Object description
Against a dark brown background, the portrait features an older woman in a white lace bonnet tied under her chin with a bow, depicted in a frontal bust-length view. Grey hair is visible beneath the bonnet, showing around the high forehead. The woman's face is covered with deep wrinkles. Her brows are furrowed, and her lips are tightly pursed. Her intense, commanding gaze is directed at the viewer. The woman is wearing a brown dress with buttons and a white detachable collar. On her shoulders is a black shawl with white spots. In her left hand, the woman holds a book with a black cover, with one finger placed between the pages.
Inscriptions
In the lower left corner of the image, there is the artist's signature: "Fr. Streit r. 1865". On the reverse side is an inscription: "Domicella z Zarzyckich Męcińska, żona Antoniego Męcińskiego, rodzice jej: Jan Zarzycki i Elżbieta Cedronska z Podlasia, córki jej panna Antonina Męcińska, Karolina za Janem Rybkowskim i Flora za Stanisławem Rajskiem. Wszyscy rodem z Krakowa. Babka Tadeusza Rybkowskiego, prababka Maryana, syna Tadeusza – malowana przez Fr. Streita w 86 roku życia swogo".
