Object description
The iconographic bust-length portrait depicts the Chief Apostle Peter, repenting after his threefold denial of Christ. The composition is built upon a sharp lighting contrast. Against a neutral dark background appears an elderly man with a thick dark beard and a moustache. The saint's face is filled with deep spiritual pain and a plea for forgiveness. His gaze is directed upwards and to the right, towards the heavenly light.
The figure's hands play a key role in conveying his emotional state. The left hand, pressed against his chest in a tense gesture, symbolises sincere repentance. With his clenched right hand, the Apostle Peter holds his traditional attributes – the keys to the Kingdom of Heaven or a scroll.
The saint is attired in canonical garments: a blue-grey chiton and an ochre-golden himation.
