Object description
Symbolic images of Jesus were intended to reveal different aspects of his earthly ministry and teaching. One of them is the Saviour in the image of the Good Shepherd, with a sheep on his shoulders and sheep around him, which appears in paintings of the Roman catacombs, in mosaics of basilicas and tombs, in sarcophagus reliefs, on tomb steles, and in the form of round sculptures from the third to the fifth century. The Late Antique pastoral image of the shepherd and harmonious nature was given a new meaning in Christian art. The shepherd with a sheep became a symbol of divine humanity and was associated with the theme of baptism. The lamb in his arms means that Jesus cares for his children as tenderly and carefully as a shepherd cares for defenceless lambs. The figure of Christ from the collection of Borys Voznytskyi Lviv National Art Gallery, made by an unknown master, is characterised by asceticism and severity of features, in contrast to the traditional iconography, according to which Jesus is depicted as a beardless young man. The lamb is placed at the Saviour's feet. The other, now lost, was probably in his arms.
