Object description
The work depicts Archangel Michael amidst a rocky landscape. The archangel stands with one foot on the defeated devil and raises a spear, ready to strike. His wings are depicted spread open, while the devil's wings are closed, symbolising defeat. The compositional technique closely mirrors Raphael's painting. The ideal figures are painted in a way that does not overwhelm the image yet exudes elegance and restraint. A method of suspension in time is employed. The depiction of the archangel's body conveys a sense of movement. In the Bible, only Michael is referred to as the archangel. The prefix "arch" means "chief" or "primary", indicating the existence of a singular leader over all beings referred to as angels. His name in Hebrew, "Mi-ka-El", can be translated as "Who is like God". The origin of the name is linked to the Christian legend of the rebellion of Lucifer, the most powerful of the angels, and his followers. Then, one of the lesser angels stood against the rebels, exclaiming: "Who is like God?". From that moment, the cry became the new name of the angel who uttered it, calling for battle against the rebels. In numerous paintings from various periods, Archangel Michael is depicted in knightly armour as he overcomes Satan.
