Object description
The painting depicts Maria Karolina de Bouillon (1697–1740). Maria Karolina from the Sobieski family was also known by the name Charlotte. She was the third daughter of James Louis Henry Sobieski. Maria Karolina was the last of the Sobieski lineage. She spent her childhood in Silesia. Many aristocrats sought her hand in marriage. Charles VI of Habsburg, Holy Roman Emperor and her cousin, found her a husband. He was Frederic Maurice Casimir de La Tour d'Auvergne, heir to the sovereign Duche de Bouillon. Her husband died on 1 October 1723 at the age of 20 during their honeymoon. Six months later, Maria Karolina married the younger brother of her late husband, Charles Godefroy de La Tour d'Auvergne, who became the Prince of Turenne and heir to the Duche de Bouillon. The wedding took place in 1724 in Paris. The couple had two children. Eventually, they divorced, and Maria Karolina moved to Silesia, then to the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, and settled in Zhovkva. After her father died in 1737, she inherited 11 towns and 140 villages, including Zhovkva, Zolochiv, Zboriv, Pomoriany, Kulykiv, and Sasiv, as well as the Olawa Principality in Silesia. In her later years, Maria Karolina spent her life in Zhovkva. She died at the age of 42. She was buried in the Church of St. Casimir in Warsaw. Her heart was embalmed and buried in the Church of St. Lawrence in Zhovkva. The artist's work is characterised by portrait realism and restraint in accordance with the principles of Classicism.
