Object description
The sculptural image of the Crucifixion has suffered significant damage. The figure of Christ is elongated, with a clear aim towards frontal viewing. The elongated face has conventionally modelled features: a high forehead, outlined cheekbones, a straight nose, a short beard, an expressive mouth with downturned corners, and sunken eyes. Jesus' expression is one of sorrow and concentration. The body is presented conventionally, without fine details – the muscles of the abdomen, legs, and chest are schematically marked, which brings the work closer to the style of folk carving. He wears a loincloth on his hips. The folds of the fabric are highlighted by shallow carved lines, which give the loincloth a decorative expressiveness. The work is notable for its simplicity and conventionality, yet it carries a strong spiritual charge.
