The composition of the work is built around a falling black cross. Beneath the cross is the figure of Jesus, barefoot and bent under the heavy burden, with a crown of thorns on his head. With his left hand, he touches the ground, while with his right hand, he holds onto the crossbeam. Around him are four men, two of whom are holding onto the cross behind him. One man on the left ties Jesus to the cross with a rope, while another, depicted on the right, says something to him. The artist depicts the Saviour in biblical clothing, while the men around him are dressed in the clothing of Galician townspeople from the early 20th century. Jesus' face is frozen in a grimace of pain, while the faces of the men are angry and unfriendly.
