Following Byzantine iconography, the Crucifixion is depicted with the figure nailed to the cross with four nails. Christ is depicted at the moment of death, his head slightly tilted to his right shoulder, his eyes closed, his face expressing suffering and inner sorrow. His head is crowned with a symbol of martyrdom – a crown of thorns. On the elongated, somewhat disproportionate figure of Christ, the master tries to convey physical exhaustion. He clearly emphasises the ribs and sunken abdominal cavity, recreating physical suffering. His legs are brought together, and his toes are meticulously modelled. The loincloth covering his hips is modelled rather schematically, but with a sense of movement. The sculpture is an example of folk sacred art, where the aim was not to reproduce anatomical features perfectly, but to convey spiritual meaning.
