Object description
The image of the Crucified Christ is rendered in the traditions of Western iconography. The Saviour is presented at the moment of death on the cross: the head is bowed, the eyes are closed, the body elongated in a characteristic curve. The figure of Christ is rendered in a generalised manner, without excessive naturalism, yet with emphasis on suffering and exhaustion. The curve of the torso, along with the asymmetry of the arms and legs, adds dramatic tension to the composition. The master reproduces the anatomical features of the human figure: the tension of the raised chest is visible, the elongated torso with a clearly defined waist, and the muscles of the arms and legs are carefully worked out. The arms of Christ are spread wide, without extreme strain, the legs bent, the feet crossed – all create a dramatic effect and a visual rhythm. The calm expression of the weary, carefully modelled face, in the treatment of its features, conveys an impression of sincerity and deep spirituality. Everything in the image emphasises the end of earthly suffering. The naked body is covered by a perizoma at the hips, rendered volumetrically, creating an impression of plasticity and realism. Despite the dramatic nature of the moment, the image is filled with silence and reconciliation. The Crucifixion embodies the central idea of the Christian faith – the sacrifice of Christ for the salvation of humanity.
