Object description
This small sculptural image, which follows Western iconography, depicts Christ at the moment of his suffering on the cross. The Saviour's arched body is filled with tension and, at the same time, dramatic grace. His arms are raised, his legs are bent at the knees, and his head is tilted to his right shoulder in a humble gesture of acceptance of his fate. The artist successfully recreates the anatomical features of the human body, emphasising the naturalness of the movements and the emotional tension of the image. The carefully crafted face with closed eyes is framed by long strands of dark hair and the straight lines of a short, wedge-shaped beard, conveying an image of physical torment and inner peace, reminiscent of a higher goal – the salvation of humanity. The drapery on the hips is interpreted freely, with smooth folds that add plasticity and harmonise the tragic image. The author of the work seeks not only to portray physical torment but also to blend human suffering with divine essence.
