Object description
The painting was created in the second half of the 16th century under the influence of "The Portrait of Paul III" by Titian. Sixtus V is depicted statically in a curule chair, emphasising his high status. The image of the Pope is reproduced from a slightly lower angle, giving the sense that the viewer is kneeling before him. The gaze of Sixtus V is directed to the side as if he was caught solving vital church matters. The depiction of a state of deep reflection, a correlate of wisdom and life experience, was typical for portraits of pontiffs in old age.
