This is a horizontal composition, most of which is taken up by the image of a bright blue sea. The light grey shore is depicted to the right, from which the walls of a yellow-brown fortress with bright red inlays on the walls cut into the sea to the left. Above them, sailing ships are shown on the water in several places. The upper part of the composition is taken up by an image of the sky – a bright blue on the right and a light grey on the left. There is an elongated greyish-brown cloud in the sky, with gulls in the background. On the left side, against the sky, a rectangular red and yellow patch, actually overhanging the fortress with a stylised depiction of the sun in blue, resembles a cloth. At the bottom right, on the background of the diamond-shaped yellow spot, is a stylised image of the sun in blue. The composition of the painting is stylised, built on contrasts of blue, dark grey, yellow, and red; the landscape has a phantasmagorical character. Despite the juxtaposition of opposing tones, the artist achieves a remarkable colouristic harmony in the composition.
