Object description
Sculptural images of the apostles were popular in folk art. Ukrainian folk sculpture was influenced by the professional plastic arts of the time. Following it, the masters borrowed a realistic interpretation of facial expressions and proportions of the human body for their works. All of this can be traced in the depiction of an apostle, where the folk master applied all his skill in conveying images. The squat figure of the saint is carved in a restrained expressive full-face pose with his right hand outstretched and his legs bent at the knees. The elongated face with a high forehead, raised eyebrows, and piercing gaze from half-open eyes shows an expression of detachment and contemplation. The apostle is dressed in a cherry-coloured tunic overlaid with a blue drapery that wraps around the lower part of the figure. One end of the drapery is thrown over the right shoulder, fluttering behind the statue, imitating movement. The master adds dynamism to the sculpture by shaping the garment folds with large geometric planes and sharp edges.
