Object description
The full-length contrapposto sculpture of the saint is depicted using Baroque balance, in an expressive pose with an outstretched arm. The ascetic face of the saint with sharpened features, a high forehead, expressive eyes with barely covered eyelids, prominent cheekbones, and sunken cheeks conveys expression and inner depth. Wavy hair curls frame the saint's head, and long strands of a split beard cascade downward. The tunic, covered with drapery, envelops the saint's body, which is defined only by an outline, and the physical shape of the figure is hardly noticeable. The sculptor skilfully models only those parts of the figure visible from beneath the dynamic folds: the head, neck, and wrists. The monumental layers of the garment, with their broad planes and fractured edges, function as independent plastic elements. The dynamic pose and theatrical movement of the man give emotional expressiveness to the image.
