Object description
The Сrucifixion of Christ is the execution of Jesus by crucifixion on the cross. This episode concludes Christ's passion and precedes the Saviour's burial and resurrection. According to the Bible, Christ redeemed Adam's original sin and opened the way to God. According to the Evangelists, the crucifixion of Jesus was attended by the Virgin Mary, the mother of Jesus Christ, John the Theologian, Mary Magdalene, Mary of Cleopas, two robbers crucified on the sides of Jesus, Roman soldiers led by a centurion mentioned in the Apocrypha as Longinus, the people, and the chief priests and scribes who mocked Jesus. Christian theologians believe that the blood of Christ washed the skull and bones of Adam, buried on Calvary, and in his person, cleansed all mankind of sinful filth, giving them the opportunity to be saved. The relief from the collection of Borys Voznytskyi Lviv National Art Gallery, the work by an unknown carver, probably from the late 16th century, is characterised by an extended narrative, details, conventionality of the reproduction of anatomical features of the human body and folklore intonations, generally inherent in the works of folk artists. The unknown folk artist likely imitated professional sacred art models.
