Pencil copies by Yulian Zaiats reproduce two well-known pastel portraits by Maurice Quentin de La Tour, reinterpreting them in a restrained graphic manner. The first portrait depicts the most prominent French commander of the 18th century, Marshal Maurice de Saxe (c. 1750–1760). In the original, the pastel is distinguished by the solemnity and grandeur of the image, with Maurice Quentin de La Tour skilfully combining military posture and individual facial features. In Y. Zaiats' version, this monumentality is conveyed through soft hatching and a clear outline of the silhouette, which preserves the dignity and strength of the model. The second portrait is of opera singer Marie Fel (1757). Maurice Quentin de La Tour emphasised her stage charm and femininity in his pastel, using light tones and delicate color transitions. In Y. Zaiats' graphic “translation”, the primary means of expression is a subtle interplay with chiaroscuro: delicate modeling of the face, emphasis on the gaze, and a light rhythm of lines that convey the artistic nature of the subject.
