Object description
A half-length image of an elderly man sitting in an armchair with his hands folded in his lap, wearing a blue suit, white shirt and a tie. The man has a small wedge-shaped beard and a trimmed moustache. The background behind the man is very dynamic in colour - it is a combination of lilac and blue-red, and to the left is a window through which the houses in flames can be seen. The manner of execution is textured and pastoral, which in turn underlines the expressive style of the painting. The painting conveys anxiety not only through the dynamism of brushstrokes and the contrasting combination of colours but also because of the psychological nature of the portrayed Werner Sombart. His figure, despite its texture, the accentuated rhythm of colours and manner of execution, is strikingly calm and poised, posing against a background of fire. Even the state of nature is emphasised as restless as if a thunderstorm is approaching. Only the professor's face and gaze betray his own inner turmoil.
