Johann Wilhelm Baur depicted several horsemen engaged in fierce conflict in this imaginary battle of Flemish soldiers. In the centre of the composition is a rider who fell from the horse, unable to hold on to the saddle. Behind him, a cavalryman in a plumed hat seized his opponent's head and raised his rapier to strike. A dead horse lies nearby while another flees, terrified by the battle. The war scene is depicted in the background, on the left, where only fragments of silhouettes of figures are visible. The engraving is part of "Battaglie di varie nazione" ("The Battles of Various Nations") series, which consisted of 13 sheets and was published in 1637.
