Jan Sebastian Szembek (1672–1731) was Grand Chancellor of the Crown, the elder of Biecz, Deputy Chancellor of the Crown, and a statesman of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. He was a son of Franciszek Szembek, a castellan of Kamianets, and Barbara Anna Rupniowska. In 1768, the portrait was mentioned as "a French image with an order and in a white big wig" in the inventory records of the Pidhirtsi Castle. From 1812 till 1887, it was recorded as "an image of Flemming, the treasurer"; and in 1939, it was titled as "Jan Jerzy Flemming, the Treasurer (?–1771)". Based on the results of the comparison of this work with similar ones housed in Poland, the Polish researcher Ostrowski attributed the portrait as an image of Jan Szembek by Adam Manyoki's workshop. The ceremonial portrait represents a waist-length figure of Jan Szembek in a fashionable white wig with a blue ribbon of the Order of the White Eagle and a star of the Order of the White Eagle on a red cape. The artist mainly focused on the face of the person portrayed.
