Object description
Mikolaj Treter (1716–1775) – a stezycki court clerk. One of the main places in the family galleries was occupied by spouses’ portraits. These were often half-length portraits of married couples in formal poses. They were always placed side by side. The portrait of Mikolaj Tretter is one such example. It is paired with the portrait of his wife Barbara Treter (Ж-4854). The half-length representation of a man is typical of 18th century ceremonial portraits, which are characterised by monumentality and an ennobled portrayal of the subject. The man is presented in a formal pose, slightly turned to the right. Every detail is carefully portrayed in a manner typical of a provincial artist. Following the traditions of ceremonial portraits, the image includes the coat of arms. The work is done in a graphically flat manner.
