Biography
Mykhailo Dzyndra was born on November 8, 1921 in the village of Demnia, Lviv region. He studied at the Art and Industry School in Lviv. In 1944, he emigrated first to Slovakia, then in 1945 – to West Germany, and in 1951 – to America (the USA), where he destroyed almost all his early works performed until the 1950s. In the mid-1960s, the artist began to create modern sculpture, initially with the characteristic features of Modernism. In 1991, he returned to independent Ukraine. At his own expense, Dzyndra built a museum in Briukhovychi, near Lviv, where he placed more than 800 of his own sculptures transported from the United States. Later on, he donated them to the state. At present, Mykhailo Dzyndra Museum of Modern Sculpture is a department of Borys Voznytskyi Lviv National Art Gallery.
