Biography
Daniel Schultz, a prominent portraitist of German origin, was one of the key figures in the artistic culture of the 17th-century Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. He was born in Gdansk around 1615 and began his studies in the workshop of his uncle, Daniel Schultz the Elder, and later travelled to Holland and Flanders for further education. In the early 1640s, Schulz lived in Amsterdam, where he was influenced by artists from Rembrandt's circle, such as Ferdinand Bol and Bartholomeus van der Helst. The professional skills acquired in the Netherlands later enabled Daniel Schultz to become the court painter of Jan Kazimierz Waza, Michal Korybut Wisniowiecki, and Jan III Sobieski, the Kings of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The artist executed many ceremonial portraits and religious images at the royal court. In 1660, Schultz returned to Gdansk, from where he made two more trips to Vienna and Paris.
Object description
A bust image of Michal Korybut Wisniowiecki, King of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, in black armour decorated with gilding, is depicted in the painting. He is wearing an extravagant black wig. The look of the Polish monarch is directed at the viewer. The white lace collar that partially covers his cuirass or the cuffs of his sleeves, embroidered with gold and silver threads, attracts attention. On the chest is the Order of the Golden Fleece. The artist depicted the texture of fabrics, lace, and the shining surface of the armour in detail. The portrait was created around 1669/1670.
