Object description
The figure of the Sorrowful Christ was carved by the folk master, often called the creator "by God's grace," as he did not have any professional skills. This sculpture is the smallest in size from the collection of the Lviv National Art Gallery; it is only fourteen centimetres high. The work is not distinguished by high artistic qualities. Its frontal composition is stiff in motion. Christ sits upright, his left hand on his knee, and his right is bent. The saint touches his cheek without leaning on his leg. The chest and belly of Jesus are depicted schematically, without any reliefs, with paint and clear grey lines. A crown of thorns carved in relief is visible on his head. Christ's indifferent gaze is directed at the viewer. Unlike other works of this type, the master did not paint the exhausted body of Jesus with drops of blood to emphasise the theme of suffering. The iconography of the image of the "Sorrowful Christ" is close to the type of the "Indifferent Person", where the face of the Savior seems to be in deep thought.
