The Gallery received the painting as an image of Saint Anne by an unknown artist. The canvas depicts a young woman turned three-quarters to the left, her head slightly raised. The thoughtful gaze of her large eyes is directed straight ahead. With her right hand, the woman is blessing, while her left hand holds a cloak. According to apocryphal texts, Anna, descended from the lineage of King David, was the daughter of a priest from the tribe of Judah and the aunt of St Elizabeth, the mother of St John the Baptist. Anne was known for her piety and compassion towards people experiencing poverty. She was childless, which was considered a disgrace among the people. Together with her husband Joachim, she fervently prayed to God for a child. In the Protoevangelium, it is stated that one day an angel of the Lord appeared to her, bringing the joyous news that her prayer had been heard. Joyful, Anne immediately went to Jerusalem to offer heartfelt gratitude to God. There she met her husband, who had also received news from the angel. God fulfilled his promise when, after a long wait, the couple finally held their child – Mary, the mother of Jesus Christ.
