Object description
The painting depicts the Lamentation of Jesus by the Virgin Mary. This iconographic type was often used in Western European art from the 13th to the 17th centuries. Among the most famous works on this theme are those by Michelangelo, Titian, Cosme Tura, and Vincent van Gogh. The painting's dark background allows viewers to distinguish the composition's main elements. The artist made Christ's body the focus of attention, from which the viewer's gaze moves to the faces of the other figures. At the bottom of the painting, the author included two small angels who embrace the body of Jesus in sorrow.
