Object description
The crucifix plays an important role in church interiors and is an essential element of the altar and processional crosses. It is also frequently depicted on roadside crosses. Both professional and folk artists have taken up the theme of the crucifixion. The folk artists gave their works a unique interpretation of the image. The sculpture from the village of Perviatychi shows the Saviour with his body straight and arms outstretched. Jesus is nailed to the cross with three nails, imitating the much more common Western iconography. Christ's face, leaning on his right shoulder, is peaceful. The folk master tried to anatomically emphasise the lines of the ribs on the bulging chest, thus recreating the body of the exhausted Saviour. The work is not emotionally expressive.
