Object description
In the centre of the painting, a young Christ sits on a stone platform, facing forward, against an arch with four columns on both sides. Jesus is dressed in a long white chiton, with his right hand raised upward and his left hand at chest level, with palms towards the viewer. He is surrounded by a crowd of elders depicted from the waist up. In the foreground, at the feet of Christ, there are two men with turbans on their heads and books in their hands. On either side of Christ is a woman and an older man, likely representing Mary and Joseph. Jesus is seated and addressing the Jewish teachers with his hands outstretched. Some people listen attentively, while others look into the open holy books, seeking answers and interpretations.
