Biography
Ludwik Papuzynski (1st half of the 19th c.) was a Polish artist who specialised in sacred art. He lived and worked in Krosno (Subcarpathian Voivodeship, Poland). He decorated local churches and also gave drawing lessons.
Object description
The work is an iconographic bust-length depiction of Jesus Christ with a crown of thorns against a dark olive background. Christ's head is tilted to the right, with his eyes looking upwards. Over his shoulder is a "scarlet robe" – a red mantle traditionally worn by monarchs on particularly solemn occasions. The painting by Papuzynski shows an evident influence from the composition of Guido Reni's "Christ Crowned with Thorns" (1639–1640).
