Object description
This polychrome work is executed within the classical canon of the Crucifixion, adhering to Western iconography. Christ's athletic body is stretched vertically, with his head tilted slightly to his right shoulder. The posture of the body conveys suffering, yet at the same time, it conveys peace after accepting the sacrifice. The figure of Christ is depicted vertically, with his arms outstretched, his legs crossed, and nailed to the cross with a single nail, which conforms to traditional Catholic sculpture standards. The crown of thorns on his head, drops of blood on his forehead, hands, and feet, and traces from the nails all emphasise the realism and dramatic nature of the scene. The pale complexion of the body contrasts with the blood, painted in bright red. Christ's naked body is covered with a perizoma (loincloth), rendered in light tones with a gold border, which gives the image a solemnity. Emphasising sacrifice and mercy, the artist paid special attention to the sorrowful yet calm expression on the face with half-closed eyes. The work leans towards the realistic tradition, but without excessive naturalism. The sculptural depiction of the Crucifixion strikes a balance between spiritual symbolism and physical realism.
