The pencil copies by Yulian Zaiats reproduce two works by German artist Friedrich August von Kaulbach, preserving the characteristic plasticity and compositional features of the originals, but interpreting them in his own graphic manner. The first copy, based on the work "My Father Friedrich Kaulbach" (1885), is a shoulder-length profile portrait of an elderly man, also an artist, with a thick, long beard and an artistic, somewhat expressive hairstyle. In both the original and the copy, the face is rendered with deep psychological characterisation and subtle detailing of the hair texture. In Y. Zaiats' work, the rich play of shadows and smooth transitions of halftones create a sense of sculptural volume, while the beard and hair are rendered with soft yet dynamic strokes that emphasise the creative charisma of the sitter. The second copy is a half-length portrait of a woman, typical of Friedrich August von Kaulbach's models, wearing a headdress and a dress with a bare back. The figure is leaning forward and resting on her left hand, forming a composition with a distinct shoulder and neck line. The original combines elegant sensuality with academic refinement. In Y. Zaiats' graphic interpretation, colour accents are replaced by stylisation, thanks to which the drawing retains the plastic expressiveness and theatrical emotionality characteristic of Friedrich August von Kaulbach's work.
