Biography
Wojciech Grabowski (15 April 1850 – 2 June 1855) was a Polish draughtsman, illustrator, and watercolourist. In 1866–1871, he studied at the Kraków School of Drawing and Painting under Feliks Szynalewski (1825–1892), Władysław Łuszczkiewicz (1828–1900), Leon Dembowski (1823–1904), and Henryk Kosowski (1815–1878). In 1871–1872, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich (Akademie der Bildenden Künste München). In 1872, he moved to Vienna, where he did illustrations for local magazines. From 1873, he lived in Lviv, from where he travelled to Przemyśl and Kraków. He wandered through Galician villages and towns in search of folklore motifs. He depicted rural scenes and characters, interpreting them with a sense of humour. In 1882, in Vienna, he met the artist Anna Bilińska (1875–1893), who remained with him until the end of his life. Wojciech Grabowski worked mainly with chalk and ink, often using watercolours. The artist's oeuvre includes works on ethnocultural and historical themes, magazine illustrations, depictions of historical buildings, and illustrations for fairy tales and legends. Wojciech Grabowski's works are kept in the National Museums in Kraków and Warsaw, the Lviv Historical Museum, and the Lviv National Art Gallery.
