Biography
Stanislaw Wyspianski was born in 1869 in Krakow. He studied at the Jagiellonian University and Jan Matejko Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow. He was a member of the Young Poland movement, and art editor of the weekly Życie (Life). Stanislaw Wyspianski is known as a playwright and poet, modernist painter, and designer. The artist died in November 1907. He was buried in Krakow.
Object description
The portrait represents a teenage girl in a dress girded with a black belt, and a white lace collar. This is a knee-length image; the figure is slightly leaning back. The image of the girl is turned three quarters to the viewer’s left. She is depicted with golden hair; it is combed back and framed by a black headband. The girl is looking at the viewer. There is a round medallion on her neck. The girl is holding a camomile in her folded hands. The vaguely painted interior of the room serves as the background of the work.
Inscriptions
At the bottom left there is an inscription "Stanislas Paris Juin 1893".
