Object description
In many churches, the Ascension sculptures are placed on a pedestal, where they remain until the religious holiday of the Ascension of the Lord. This tradition follows Western iconography and illustrates the events described in the Apocryphal Gospel. The sculpture of Christ from Zhydachiv shows a full-length figure of Jesus, dressed in a cloak, with his right hand in a blessing gesture and the position of his left hand indicating that it was holding a khorugv. Wavy dark hair and beard strands flow around the elongated oval of Jesus' face. The piercing gaze of the large eyes, framed by the bulging arches of the eyebrows, is directed at the viewer. This work by an unknown folk artist is characterised by its static nature, broken by the left foot standing on a skull. The image's equanimity is emphasised by the gentle folds of the thigh bandage, worked in low relief, and the linearly vertical draperies of the cloak. The somewhat stooped figure of the Almighty, narrow lowered shoulders, large feet, and the interpretation of the skull reveal the artist's imperfect knowledge of the anatomy of the human body. Polychrome plays an essential role in conveying the image of the Resurrection of Christ, enhancing the emotionality of the sculpture.
