Object description
In the Baroque period, a human played the leading role. At that time, masters often carved figures where facial expressions, gestures, and even curves of draperies carried a specific semantic load. The full-length figure of the saintly woman is reproduced in an S-shaped silhouette (figura serpentinata) that is common in Baroque plastic. The woman is depicted in a graceful pose with theatrically spread arms and her head playfully bowed to her left shoulder. Her expressive elongated oval plump-cheeked face with a distinctly rounded chin, a tall, smooth forehead with a low line of arched eyebrows above wide-open eyes, and a small mouth with a slight smile are depicted without any specifics. The balanced and calm gaze of the woman is directed upwards. The head of the saintly woman is crowned with a diadem; dark strands of wavy hair, carved by shallow incised lines, fall down. The massive neck turns into lowered shoulders; the cross hangs on it. The saintly woman is dressed in a long dress with a corset that emphasises the curves of her body. Over the left shoulder, a drapery is thrown. It wraps the right thigh and smoothly falls down. The woman's outfit is covered with lines of shallow folds, which spread downwards in soft waves, wrapping the figure. The inner mood of the saintly woman was conveyed through external expression, characteristic of the Baroque period.
