Object description
The "Sorrowful Christ" work from the village of Zhornyska, carved by a folk master, is distinguished by a unique interpretation of the "Indifferent Person" image, close to the type of the "Thinker". The head of the Saviour is bowed and leant on the right palm; the hips are wrapped with a yellow loincloth. Jesus' elongated face with a small wedge-shaped beard is framed with waves of dark hair falling over his shoulders. The large brown eyes of Christ under heavy eyelids are accurately performed. His face is sorrowful; the saintly man seems to be in deep thought. His heavy gaze is directed downwards. A skinny body with protruding ribs creates a kind of dissonance with the muscular arms of Christ. Not very anatomically accurate skull under the man's right foot is reproduced in the manner of folk primitive. Calmness and tranquillity emphasise the static figure; the smooth lines of the sculpture reflect a person deeply immersed in his thoughts.
