Object description
The same style of execution and common interpretation of the image unites three works from the village of Sharpantsi. The sculptures belong to the same artist and are distinguished by their graphic representation of the human figure. The elongated figure of the angel, in the form of a young man, is shown in motion, emphasised by the right leg bent at the knee and the arms outstretched. The slender silhouette is not anatomically correct. The restrained flow of the vertical lines of the drapery is formed by ribbed ridges, without smooth transitions, with clear folds. The strict geometry of the drapery in the lower part of the sculpture is softened by the calm pattern of the tunic bodice, modelled by recessed irregular planes. Attention is drawn to the peculiarly elongated face, framed by engraved strands of hair which, in the Baroque tradition, fall over the shoulders and form a distinctive forelock above the forehead. The elongated face has a low forehead, clearly defined eyes, a straight nose, and a wide mouth. The work is characterised by its restraint in conveying the image of an angel.
