Biography: Felice Campi (1746–1817) was an Italian artist. There is relatively little information about him. It is known that he was the son of Agostino and Anna Varese, originally from Legnago. At the age of ten, the painter was sent to study in the workshop of Giuseppe Bazzani, a Mantuan artist. Later, Felice Campi was sent to Venice, where he studied the works of Titian, Veronese, and Tintoretto. In 1765, the "Mantuan Academy of Fine Arts" awarded the artist a gold medal. After the death of his mentor Bazzani, Campi followed the Cremonese artist Giuseppe Bottani, who was appointed the Academy director.

Object description

The painting depicts a man standing at a round table, turned three-quarters, looking at the viewer. The portrait's hairstyle corresponds to late eighteenth-century fashion. He wears a red velvet caftan, a blue waistcoat embroidered with gold silk, and a jabot. The sleeves are adorned with lace, and he wears a white scarf around his neck. A black cloak with a white sable fur lining is pulled down from his shoulders and draped over his left arm. The diplomat raises his left hand while holding an open book with his right hand. The frame of the book partially overlays the inscription: "Titutiones Politiques Paris 1776".
