Object description
The design of the cross is a seven-pointed cross with an elongated central crosspiece (the end of the central frame is missing). The work was done with a carving tool using contour, notched, and flat relief carving techniques. The work is characterised by a simple and laconic plastic and compositional interpretation of the decorative design, which on both sides occupies the most important part of the work – the central frame and the main surface of the stem. On the front, in the centre, there is a flat carved image of a seven-pointed cross, at the foot of which is the skull of Adam, outlined in a flat contour line. At the lower end of the central bar is an illegible inscription framed by a border decorated with a geometric pattern line. The background is modelled with small, flat, intersecting diagonal lines. The reverse side is identical in decoration to the front, except that the lower end of the stem has a recess. The cross is profiled on both sides with a stripe decorated with a geometric "kryvulka" (curved) motif. Due to considerable losses, it is difficult to get an idea of the master's original intention in the decorative solution of the work.
