Object description
Against a dark background is a bust-length depiction of a young woman. Her torso is shown in a frontal view, and her head is turned slightly to the left and tilted. A laurel wreath is depicted on her flowing, wavy red hair. The woman's gaze is directed downward towards the book she supports with her left hand. Above the book, a piece of a wooden wheel with an iron spoke is visible in the lower-left corner. This theme was prevalent, as evidenced by numerous versions, replicas, and copies. Given the depiction of the laurel wreath and the book, the figure in this painting can be interpreted as an allegory of poetry. However, the palm leaves in the original painting could also indicate the depiction of a saint. The palm branch has been replaced with a wheel featuring an iron spoke in the presented copy. Given these iconographic elements, it can be asserted that this painting depicts Saint Catherine
