Object description
The god of war, Mars, is depicted. The sculpture is dated to the 2nd century AD. It is a Roman copy of a Hellenistic sculpture. The masters of this period intricately modelled only the head and face, while the figure is rendered somewhat distantly. A portrait head was incorporated into a ready-made standard figure. The pose, armour, and paludamentum (upper garment) indicate that this work is a statue of an emperor who was identified with the god of war, Mars. The piece originates from Aspendos (Asia Minor).
